Zone 11 representative bowls is well under way with the seniors starting their 10 week Combined Zones Round Robin campaign before the Interzone Sides Championships are held in Wagga Wagga mid July. The round robin has started well for zone 11 with a strong performance against the difficult zone 12 side. The sides for week 1 were Harry Black (Double Bay), Col Dawson (Greenlees), Barrie Brickman (Double Bay) & Jack Kampel (Double Bay); Les Thorne (Wests), Wal Picklum (AEBC), Terry Starr (Greenlees) & Eddie Truesdale (Greenlees); Tony Hughes (Eastlakes), Peter Livesey (Matraville RSL), Ray Stokes (Kensington) & Paul Roseland (Matraville RSL) and Les Brem (Double Bay), John McDonald (Coogee), Pepe Glick (Double Bay) & Ray Coombes (Greenlees). Zone 11 had a 3-1 rink win by 89-63 with Eddie winning 31-17, Paul 21-9, Ray 26-16 and Jack losing 11-21.
The annual zone 11 v zone 9 representative trials was held on the 1st Sunday of May on the lovely northern beaches at Dee Why Bowling Club, North Dee Why/South Cromer. Unfortunately for zone 11, once again some late notice pullouts and no shows complicated selections and selectors have indicated their loss of patience with this reoccurring situation. In the A division, zone 11 turned the tables on zone 9 for last years Interzone Sides Championship semi final loss with 3-1 rink 82–71 win. Young Double Bay star Matt Fetherston made his rep debut alongside dad Rob and combined with Nafan Henke and Ray Pearse from Alexandria-Erskineville for a convincing 27-13 win. Shane Dollar (Hillsdale) skipped the Greenlees pair Ben Williams and Tony Monda for a 23-18 win over Lee Threthowan’s side which was a good win considering the side played without a 3rd for most of the game. Mark Golby (Greenlees), Stuart Chapman (Alexandria-Erskineville), Gary Pearson (Bondi) and Rick Roper (Waverley) were the other winners with a hard fought 19-14 victory. Ben McCall (Bronte), Mark Gorlicki (Greenlees) and Alexandria-Erskineville bowlers Robert Dixon and Simon Ferrier suffered a 26-13 defeat. In the B division, zone 11 called upon the services of Zone President Gary Byrnes (Matraville RSL), Vice President John McDonald (Coogee) and Chairman of Selectors Gerald Weinberg (Double Bay) that were meant to be in there in an official capacity only. One of the B sides found themselves 0-22 down and with another side dropping an early 8, yes 8, it was always going to be tough. In the end the results were Denis Paul (Bronte), Calum Pirie (Alexandria-Erskineville), John McDonald & Peter Macdonald (Kensington) 24-14, David Vavrecek (Kensington), Ovidio Celorio (Wests), Scott Foster (Marrickville) & Graeme Kennedy (Kensington) 17-15, Dan Smith (Bondi), Vlad Ivanovic (Alexandria-Erskineville), Ian Skellington (Leichhardt) & Costa Delmar (Alexandria-Erskineville) 12-24 and Dan Novak (Bondi), Gerald Weinberg, Richard Webster (Kensington) & Gary Byrnes 12-27 for a 2-2 rink 65-80 loss which was a good fight back considering the start. Once again, hats go off to zone 9 officials and bowlers for their organisation of the day, sportsmanship and wonderful lunch supplied after the game.
