The appointment of high profile lawn bowler, James Cook, as Double Bay Bowling Club’s Development Officer and Bowls Administrator was announced on Wednesday 6th April 2005.
Double Bay is the first bowling club in Sydney’s Metropolitan Zone 11 (Eastern & Western Suburbs) to have a full-time professional responsible for the code’s local development.
By appointing James Cook (28) as the club’s Bowls Administrator, Double Bay Bowling Club has demonstrated its commitment to the future development of the great game of lawn bowls in general. Some of James' main duties include:
• Development of a club bowls recruitment program, with the aim of sustaining and ultimately increasing bowls membership numbers and improving the profile of the game of bowls in the local community.
• The formation of a Club Junior Bowls Committee, with the aim of encouraging junior’s to join the club after participating in organized school sporting events.
• Liaison with the RNSWBA, particularly regarding club development and recruitment initiatives.
• Liaison with local schools to secure a regular school sports program at the club.
• Organize and run club and open tournaments.
• Implement club bowls development ideas, focussing on all levels and grades of bowlers at the club.
• Co-ordinate all facets of the game of bowls at the club, working in conjunction with the various bowls related committees that already exist and which will exist in the future, to ensure the continued and growing success of the club in general.
The announcement, by club chairman John Rosen, was greeted with resounding approval by almost 90 members. “Double Bay has a sound financial base, but its leadership is concerned at the average 73-years-of-age of the current membership,” Rosen said. “The board unanimously approved the appointment, because it realised that a younger membership is the only solution to the club’s survival into the next decade.”
