---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once again Double Bay featured both finalists and earned the right to hold the final on home turf on Thursday 15th July 2010.

With Jules Friedlander not able to play Iris Kampel took over as skip and Lorraine McLaughlin joined the team and with Marie Thatcher and Gail Black went from strength to strength.

At the start Barbara Shotland Pam Stein Karen Levinson and Mary Newin got away to a good lead and it looked like our most successful combo was having another "day at the office!"

As we all know lawn bowls can be most unpredictable and a change in fortune can happen like a bolt from the blue!.

Marie Thatcher and Gail Black provided that "bolt" and with a strong crosswind making it difficult to maintain consistency the momentum changed from midway through the game. Lorraine provided her usual "big red bowl" when called on to make conversions.

From the 13th end with the scores at 14 to 13 Iris and her girls put on the pressure and steadily pushed ahead to win 24 to 18.

Double Bay will play a team from Sutherlandshire on 28th July at a Group J knockout playoff, and that winner will meet St George Canterbury on July 29th for a place in the State Playoffs at Warilla in November.

DOUBLE BAY PAIRS OFF TO THE LAST 16 AT TUNCURRY!

What a wonderful win for Jenny and Barbara at Sylvania on Friday 21st May.

Having beaten St George on Thursday, the Sutherland shire pair from

Gymea started off winning the first 2 ends.

Jenny and Barbs settled down and by the 10th. end were 9 to 3. A light drizzle started but did not seem to change the pace of the play, and Jenny put her opposing lead under a lot of pressure with good drawing bowls and by the 14th. end our girls had a lead of 13 to 8.

The 16th. end proved a pivotal one as we were holding 3 close bowls and with her last bowl Gymea's skip played a superb draw to take the shot.

Suddenly and from nowhere disaster struck and with a slight change in the wind we dropped a 4, and now Gymea took the lead 14/13

The 18th. end was a close measure which we won, 14/14.

The 19th. end was all Gymea and they picked up a 3 to lead 17/14.

The 20th. end saw a triumphant return by the girls to win 2 shots and trailing by 1.

The 21st. end had all the Double Bay supporters sitting on there edge of their chairs and I'm sure I heard faint sounds of  "c'mon Double Bay"

Jenny was the first to put a close bowl to tie the match and then Barbara put in a second shot.

The Gymea skip played a magnificent last bowl to trail the jack but it finished between 3 of our bowls and we finished a nail biter at 19/17.

The State playoffs at Tuncurry are on the 15th. and 16th. of September.

CONGRATULATIONS

SANDRA BALLARD

DBWBC SINGLES CHAMPION

Sandra Ballard 31  def   Marie Thatcher 16

After a very eventful and successful week of Pennant playoffs the Finals of the Club Championship took place on Thursday 6th May.

The weather was brisk at the start but the sun shone through and both players put on a good display of draw bowls.

The match was very even and for the first couple of hours and there was no more than a shot or two the difference.

At 15 all the match was “up for grabs" so to speak! Sandra a seasoned singles player then got into a good rhythm and went ahead by 8 shots.

In the 3rd hour of play Marie tried to fight back but it was not her day and with good consistency play Sandra ran out the winner by 31 shots to 16.

In 2006 Sandra won the District Singles title and glimpses of that form came through for Sandra today.

Having suffered with an injured left wrist for some time now she has had a happy return to form.

We wish Sandra great success when she represents our club at the Champion of Club Champions at Oak Flats on 9th August 2010.
